Alger itself is an unincorporated community. It was established in 1883 as a railway junction. Cole Canoe Base is a nearby camp for the Boy Scouts of America; it is located on East Greenwood Road.

Benton Harbor students have a history of winning the $5,000 scholarship, but with only 15 awarded in Michigan per year, usually the high school sees only one or two come its way.
