Brief Information About Ashland
Ashland, formerly known as Poage Settlement, is a city in Boyd County, Kentucky. It's along the banks of the Ohio River. Its population at the 2000 census was 21,981. It is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city serves as an important medical and economic center for the Metropolitan Statistical Area.
AK Steel, a major steel producer, is in Ashland. The King's Daughters Medical Center, the fourth largest hospital in the state of Kentucky, the 465-bed not-for-profit institution is the city's largest employer at over 4,000 employees. The former Ashland Tuberculosis Hospital is now used as the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab for the past many years.
The city has a number of festivals, an Art Deco theater as well as other art centers. It also has a sprawling Central Park, along with other smaller parks. Ashland publishes one newspaper.
