Brief Information About Astoria
Astoria is a city in and the county seat of Clatsop County, Oregon. The American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria in 1811 at the city site. The fort and the city were both named after the American investor John Jacob Astor. The city is part of the Astoria Metro Area. Established in the early nineteenth century, the city was incorporated on October 20, 1876. It has a total area of 10.6 square miles. 4.5 square miles of the area is water, and the rest is land. The Port of Astoria is a deep water port located here.
Tourism is the most important economic activity here. Art and light manufacturing are the other commercial activities. It is a port of call for cruise ships for a number of decades now. Other popular attractions include the Astoria Column, the Fisher Poets Gathering, and the western terminus of the TransAmerica Trail created by the American Cycling Association. Columbia River Maritime Museum, Peter Iredale shipwreck, Clatsop Spit and CGAS Astoria are also tourist spots.
Public education is offered by the Astoria School District, comprising four primary and secondary schools, including Astoria High School. Higher education is offered by Clatsop Community College.
