Helpful Definition for: Bowling Alleys
Atlanta has one or more bowling alleys. Usually, ten-pin bowling is played. A bowling alley is a place, often in a recreational or entertainment center, with a flat, polished surface with lanes in it with pins at the end of which, which are to be knocked down by the bowling ball. The bowling lane is 60 feet long, and 41.5 inches wide, bordered on both sides by gutters to collect stray balls. There is also a separate approach area. There are many rules and regulations governing the sport, but one can also play informally for amusement. Automated scoring systems are now available. A perfect score in a game of ten-pin is 300, scored by making 12 strikes in a row. This is very rare and has only been achieved a few times. A bowling alley is now added to centers with game rooms, multi-screen cinemas, restaurants and night clubs. This is an extremely popular sport, enjoyed by men and women alike in Atlanta. Youngsters are especially drawn to it. A good hand-eye co-ordination is helpful in this sport. According to estimates, more men and women worldwide bowl than play any other sport, excepting football.
