The term 'Spa' is derived from the name of the town Spa in Belgium and is associated with water treatment. Spa resorts usually offer various water treatments through the curative powers of mineral water. In earlier days, it was believed that bathing in hot or cold springs could cure various ailments and was also known as medicinal bathing. But after the American Revolution, the spa industry began to gain popularity. Then there are day spas in Honolulu that are business establishments which offer professionally administered personal care treatment such as massages and facials. A medical spa is a term that describes any medical office in Honolulu that operates under the supervision of a licensed health care professional, and offers non-surgical cosmetic medical treatments.

Whereas, 'Sauna' is a facility in a small room or house, designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions. In a typical sauna session in Honolulu, participants can sit or lie down with the room temperature typically netween 70 degree Celsius and 100 degree Celsius. This promotes sweating and in turn induces relaxation. In earlier days, sauna featured a fireplace where stones were heated to a high temperature and water was thrown over it to produce steam.
