Hoover is a city spread in the Jefferson and Shelby Counties in the state of Alabama. It is Birmingham-Hoover Metro Area, and is the largest suburb of Birmingham. It is also part of the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman, AL CSA. It has a total area of 43.65 square miles. 43.13 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. It is located on the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The city is named after William H. Hoover, a local insurance company owner, and has been so named from the 1930s. It was officially incorporated in 1967. The event of opening Interstate I-459, with a major interchange with Interstate I-65 within the city proved to be a catalyst for growth here. Another major events was the opening of Riverchase Galleria shopping-hotel-office complex.

The major contributor to the conomy are offices and shopping centers housed with the Riverchase Galleria, a mixed-use complex. Top employers include Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Hoover Board of Education, Regions Financial, AT&T, City of Hoover and Wal-Mart. The major shopping destinations are JCPenney, Belk, Macy's, and Sears. Public education is administered by Hoover City School District, comprising ten elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools. The Birmingham News (daily) and the Over the Mountain Journal (weekly) are the local publications. It also has one local TV station, ABC 33/40.
