Lansing is the capital of the U.S. state of Michigan.Lansing was spotted by explorer Hugh Howard in 1790 while canoeing the Grand River.The city has a total area of 36.6 square miles (95 km2).
Colloquially referred to as "Mid-Michigan",the Lansing Metropolitan Area,, is an important center for educational, cultural, governmental, business, and high-tech manufacturing, including two medical schools, one veterinary school, two nursing schools, two law schools, including the nation's largest law school (Thomas M. Cooley Law School), a Big Ten Conference university (Michigan State), the state capital, the state Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, a federal court, the Library of Michigan and Historical Center, and headquarters of four national insurance companies .In January 2009 IBM announced that it was opening its first U.S. programming center in the former MSU Federal Credit Union headquarters in East Lansing for application software for governments, universities, etc. Liquid Web which is the largest web hosting company in Michigan, moved into its new $80 million Lansing headquarters.
