Helpful Definition for: Surgical Centers
Surgery centers at Memphis are called by a number of different names, such as Ambulatory surgery centers, outpatient surgery centers or same day surgery centers. These are healthcare facilities where relatively uncomplicated surgeries are performed, and there is no need for an overnight hospital stay. The level of complexity of the procedure falls somewhere between a simple trip to the doctor's chamber and a surgery needing the patient to stay for more than 24 hours. Surgery, pain management and diagnostic services are usually all offered at the center. The centers are usually owned partly by development/management companies and partly by the physicians themselves. Surgeries of the knee, shoulder, eye, spine and others are routinely performed at such centers. Surgery centers at Memphis have the advantage of low costs due to non-requirement of an overnight stay (and the facilities that would be required for enabling this). It is also beneficial for the patient, as it saves time. However, it is prudent to talk with the physician as well as the surgeon before undergoing a procedure so that no complications are seen at a later stage. There are more than 5,000 ASCs in the country now, that perform more than 22 million surgeries annually.
