Helpful Definition for: Signs
Signs, or signage, are visual graphics used to convey information to the public. The functions of signs vary, and include providing advertising (i.e., banners, billboards, digital signs, exterior wall signs, hanging signs, lettering on windows or vehicles, marquees, neon signs, painted signs, posters and proprietor signs); direction (arrows and directional markers, etc.); identification (i.e., street signs and numbers, signs for various facilities such as hospitals, restrooms and customer service areas); information (i.e., directories, floor plans and instructions); and warning (traffic and road signs, etc.). Advertising and informational signs are generally rectangular in shape; warnings of danger are conveyed using triangular-shaped signage. Regardless of what purpose they are intended to serve, signs must be noticeable and easily comprehended in order to be effective. Companies involved in the sign business often specialize in designing and creating custom signs for clients ranging from individuals and sole proprietorships to neighborhood establishments, chain stores, and large corporations.
