The elected officials in Utica form a part of the federal government of the United States. On a national level, the head of state, the President, is elected indirectly by the people, through an Electoral College. All members of the federal legislature are directly elected. There are many elected offices at the state level, each state having at least an elective governor and legislature. At the local level, county and city government positions are usually filled by election, especially within the legislative branch. Some examples of local elected positions include sheriffs at the county level and mayors and school board members at the city level.
