Alabaster is a city in Shelby County, Alabama. It is a suburb towards the southern border of Birmingham. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metro Area. The city has a rapidly growing population, and the 2010 census puts the figure at 30,352. The city has a total area of 20.6 square miles. 20.5 square miles of the city area is land and 0.1 square miles of it (0.24%) is water. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

Growth of the community was facilitated by the U.S.Highway 31, which was initially constructed with two lanes. It connected this area with Birmingham and Montgomery. The city was named for  the "white calcium carbonate mineral", which was manhufactured by Alabaster Lime Co.

The cost of living in Alabama is about 4% lower than the country average.Colonial Promenade and White Stone Shopping Center contribute to the local economy. Sales, services, professional occupations, and management operations are other activities driving the economy.
