Amherst is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Amherst is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area, and its population at the 2010 census was 37,819. The Amherst-Northampton region is known as the happy valley due to the art and music communities, progressive ideas, prestigious colleges and large student population. Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst are all located in the town.

The town population majorly comrpises White Americans. According to the 2000 census, 5.10% of the population comprised African Americans, 9.02% of the population had Asian origins, and 6.19% were of Hispanic origin.
