Amsterdam is a city in Montgomery County, New York. It is named after the Dutch city of Amsterdam. It is part of the Amsterdam Metro Area. It was settled by Dutch immigrants in early nineteenth century, and was formally incorporated in 1830. It has a total area of 6.3 square miles. 5.9 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. The water content is due to the Mohawk River, along with the Erie Canal. Both of these cross the southern part of the city.
Historically, the major industries were carpet, textile, and pearl button manufacturing. Most of these shut down and/or moved away by the early twentieth century. Earlier, Coleco was also located here. Now, commercial outfits include the Longview Fibre Company, the Fownes Glove Company, Power and Composite Industries, and Fiber Glass Industries. The prominent shopping center is the Amsterdam Riverfront Center. There is one newspaper, The Recorder, and two AM radio stations, WVTL and WCSS.
Local attractions include the former National Guard Armory, converted into an inn. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a popular filming location. Amsterdam also has the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, and a golf course, along with parks and open spaces. There are a number of both public and private schools.
