Anniston is a city in and the county seat of Calhoun County, Alabama. It is one of the main cities of the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is noted for its well planned layout, and was called "The Model City" by Henry W. Grady.
Historically, the city had the Woodstock Iron Company established in 1872, which had a large furnace used for smelting iron. The town planners popularized the area as a health resort, leading to the establishment of a number of hotels. Anniston served as a weapon storage and maintenance site during WWI and II.
Currently, the city is a vibrant, bustling center of industry that has worked to retain its environmental heritage. The Spirit of Anniston Main Street Program, Inc., a nonprofit organization started in 1993, led the restoration and revitalization of historic downtown Anniston.
Anniston is also well-known as a cultural hub. The Knox Concert Series produces an annual season of world-renowned musical and dance productions. The Community Actors' Studio Theatre community theatre organization performs plays, musicals, and revues using the talents of local performers, actors, and musicians. CAST also organizes specially funded programs to educate area children in the arts for free. The city also is home to the Anniston Museum of Natural History and the Berman Museum of World History.
The Army maintains the Anniston Army Depot which is for the maintenance of most Army tracked vehicles. The chemical weapons stored here have since been destroyed in a major exercise. The depot is the most significant employer for the city.
