Helpful Definition for: Sprinklers - Garden & Lawn

Irrigation sprinkler is a device which is used for irrigation of lawns or crops. It is usually used on farms, golf courses, and yards, to provide water to vegetation and plants in the event of drought. They may also be used for recreation, as a cooling system, or to keep down the amount of airborne dust. Home lawn sprinklers vary widely in their size, cost, and complexity. Small sprinklers are available at home and garden stores for small costs. These are often attached to an outdoor water faucet and are placed only temporarily. In Arlington these sprinklers can be fixed with spray heads that have a set pattern and generally spray between 1.5-2m, full rotating sprinklers that can spray a broken stream of water from 6-12m, or small drip emitters that release a slow, steady drip of water on more delicate plants such as flowers and shrubs.

Scientists Conducting Research into Fluorinated Pollutants Known As PFAs
Chris Boyle NEW YORK – Scientists have been placing a growing emphasis on a series of commonly-found – but until recently misunderstood – chemicals typically utilized in the creation of consumer products such as water-resistant clothing, stain-resistant furniture, nonstick cookware, and more, focusing mainly on their intrusion into the environment and the subsequent potential health risks to human beings. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl are perfluorinated chemicals – or PFAs for short – were created in the mid-20th century and have found widespread u...

The Threat of Plastic on the Environment Evolves into “Microplastics”
Chris Boyle NEW YORK – As if the danger that discarded, non-biodegradable plastics pose to the environment aren’t enough, a new breed is making its presence felt; a dangerous evolution known as “Microplastics.” Microplastics are not a specific kind of plastic, but rather any type of plastic fragment that is less than five millimeters in length; they enter natural ecosystems from a variety of sources, including, but not limited to, cosmetics, clothing, and industrial processes. Some Microplastics enter the environment directly as a result of various sour...

Bioplastics – Not Good for the Environment After All?
Chris Boyle NEW YORK – According to recent reports, bioplastics would conceivably be as bad – if not worse – for the environment than conventional plastics, news that is taking a lot of green advocates completely by surprise. Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, food waste, etc. Bioplastic can be made from agricultural by-products and also from used plastic bottles and other containers using microorganisms. Common plastics, such as fossil-fuel plastics (also call...

Chris Boyle NEW YORK – According to leading environmentalist and human rights activist Farai Maguwu, Chinese companies that have set up shop in Zimbabwe – with some not even having the proper licenses to operate – have been engaging in practices that are wreaking “catastrophic” environmental damage upon the African country. Chinese companies, especially in the gold, diamond, and chrome mining industries, have been accused of engaging in numerous activities that are extremely detrimental to Zimbabwean eco-systems, including the dumping of toxic waste int...

Effectively Doing Your Laundry While Remaining a Staunch Environmentalist
Chris Boyle COMMACK – When it comes to doing your laundry, even the most steadfast environmentalist may find it a difficult task to get their whites white while successfully navigating the sheer amount of chemicals and additives that most store-bought laundry products bring to the table, in conjunction with the hazardous by-products produced and the huge drain on natural resources. When it comes to the environment, laundry day is an often-overlooked component of backdoor pollution, but not a hard one to overcome once you’ve acknowledged it and planned a...
