Brief Information About Ashland

Ashland is a city in Jackson County, Ohio. It is named after cities in Ohio and Kentucky, and was originally incorporated as a town in 1855 with the name of Ashland Mills. Prior to the settlement of Euorpean immigrants, Native Americans were settled in approximately the same area. The area was settled in the mid nineteenth century, and the name was changed in the 1870s, with the "Mills" being dropped. It has a total area of 6.5 square miles, all of which is land. It is located in the foothills of the Siskiyou and Cascade ranges. It falls on Interstate 5, 15 miles to the north of the California state border.

Tourism is the most significant economic activity here. This is mainly due to the internationally acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Hotels, motels and restaurants flourish due to the large number of visitors to it annually. Starting as a summer festival, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has grown into a season from February to October, running across three theaters with both Shakespeare and non-Shakespeare plays. Tickets sold here are the highest in the country, with an annual visitors' count being over 100,000. Other significant employers include the Southern Oregon University, Ashland Public Schools, Ashland Community Hospital and the City of Ashland. Brammo, Inc., maker of the Enertia and Empulse electric motorcycles, and The Bathroom Readers' Institute and Bathroom Readers' Press are also located here.

Other points and events of attraction in the city include the Ashland Independent Film Festival, National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, Lithia Park (which is on the National Register of Historic Places), and many more. Public education is offered across three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, one magnet school and a community learning center. Higher education is offered at the Southern Oregon University. Ashland Community Hospital is the local hospital.
