What Is: Diesel Repair & Service?
Diesel repair and service shops specialize in the maintenance and repair of diesel-powered vehicles such as cars, light trucks, RVs, buses, heavy trucks and tractor trailers, along with other diesel-fueled equipment including backhoes, cranes, bulldozers, tractors, forklifts, generators and pumps. Because diesel engines are more fuel efficient than gasoline engines, and generally more reliable for heavy applications, they are found in most heavy equipment and are considered the backbone of the transportation industry. Diesel mechanics, or technicians, perform routine maintenance including oil changes, fuel and air filter changes, and fuel system bleeding, along with repair services such as major and minor engine overhauls, replacing or repairing components (ie., fuel injection systems, charged-air applications and exhaust systems), rebuilding brakes, and, increasingly, using computers to diagnose problems and make adjustments to electronically-controlled engine functions. Many repair shops that do work on diesel vehicles and equipment also provide repairs and services for gasoline-powered vehicles.
