The town was founded in mid nineteenth century, and named after the pioneer settlers. It was incorporated as "Bells Depot" in 1868, and the word Depot was dropped in 1880.

Manufacturing, tourism, retail and public administration are the major commercial activities here. Bells Elementary is the local public school.
