Brief Information About Charlestown


Charlestown is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island. It is part of the Providence-New Bedford-Fall River Metro Area, and has a total area of 59.3 square miles. 36.8 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. Named after King Charles II, the city was incorporated in 1747. A portion of it was split to form the town of Richmond in 1747.

The Narragansett Indian Tribe have their headquarters here. Tourism is the major commercial activity. There are a number of recreational activities, sports, an annual seafood and lobster festival, a number of historic structures, such as Babcock House, Foster Cove Archeological Site, Historic Village of the Narragansetts in Charlestown, Shannock Historic District, along with other facilities. The cost of living here is 35.90% higher than the country average.
