Auto racing is popular in Columbus. In this sport, cars are raced for competition. It is one of the most watched sports globally. Racing as a sport begun in the late nineteenth century, and then grew in popularity during the twentieth century. First initiated in France, it came to the USA in a few years, and the Milwaukee Mile is considered to be the oldest racing track in the world. It is still in active use. The various categories of racing are as follows: formula racing, touring car racing, sports car racing, production car racing, spec racing, stock car racing (the most popular auto race version in the country), rallying, drag racing, off-road racing, kart racing and historic motorsport. There may be more than one version of racing prevalent in Columbus. Stock car racing, raced on oval tracks, stock cars, which are actually custom built for races, is extremely popular. The most prominent governing body for this version is NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), whose popular races arethe Daytona 500, the Southern 500, the Coca-Cola 600, and the Brickyard 400. Many other feeder races are also governed and organized by NASCAR.
