Famous for its Home rule Municipality, Cortez is the County seat of Montezuma County in the U.S. State of Colorado. Cortez is named after the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez. With a total area of about 14.5 sq. kms., the city is located at an elevated height of about 6190 ft. above the ground level. There are a number of places and historical buildings in the city which are a part of the National Register of Historical places. They are of huge interest to visitors of the city, and help in the growth of the local tourism sector.
