Coupeville has chapters of one or more humane societies. These are societies that work towards prevention of suffering and abuse of both animals and humans, though the term in its present usage mostly refers to prevention of cruelty towards animals. Some of the policies followed by such societies include sheltering, adoption, and euthanasia of animals, along with nationally coordinated drives such as for animal rescue during natural disasters, treatment and transport of animals and advocating conservation and preservation of wildlife. Some humane societies may also follow a no-kill policy for the sheltered animals, unless they suffer from an untreatable medical condition.
