Georgetown is a town and lies west of the center of the south line of the Madison County, New York, United States. It is surrounded north by Nelson, east by Lebanon, south by Chenango county, and west by De Ruyter. Georgetown was first settled around 1804 and established from part of the Town of DeRuyter in 1815. The town derived its named at the recommendation of the Legislature, instead of being called Washington, which was the choice of the inhabitants. The Spirit House of Georgetown was listed one of the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The land surface of the town is mainly hilly upland and the Otselic Creek is Georgetown's principal stream.
