What Is: Fine Art Casting?
Fine art casting is the process of reproducing an artist's vision by casting the model work in one of a variety of materials, generally metals such as bronze, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and, in rare cases, even silver or gold. This process takes place in a fine arts foundry, a factory that produces metal castings and is in the business of working with artists and sculptors. The casting procedure involves first making a mold of the object, or sculpture. Molds are often created using a process called sand casting, which combines sand with a bonding agent such as clay; they can also be made using wax, urethane and silicone materials. The complexity of the artistic piece will often dictate the type of molding procedure employed, as total attention to detail is essential in casting objects of fine art. There are numerous fine art foundries located throughout the United States and Canada.
