The city of Shishmaref is located in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is part of the Nome Census Area on Sarichef Island in the Chukchi Sea, in the north Bering Strait approximately 5 miles from the mainland. Shishmaref is known as the friendliest village in Alaska. Local residents rely mainly on hunting and gathering much of their food. Sea mammals like oogruk (bearded seal), other seals and walrus, fish, birds, and moose as their primary food sources. Shishmaref coordinates at 66°15′20″N 166°04′20″W. It is elevated by 16 feet above sea level. The city was incorporated on July 13, 1969.
