Somerville was a former county seat of Morgan County from year 1818 to 1891 before Decatur. The total land area is approximately 1.0 square mile at 34°28′12″N 86°47′56″W. Somerville has an elevation of 656 feet above sea level. Somerville derived its name from an officer Robert M. Summerville which killed on the Creek Indian War in 1814.
