Named after 19th century United States senator James Burrill, Jr., the then Attorney General of the state, the town is a part of the Providence-New Bedford-Fall River Metro Area. Glendale, Harrisville, Mapleville, Nasonville, Oakland, and Pascoag are the constituent villages that make up the town. The town was incorporated in 1806.
