One of the largest cities in the US state of Vermont is almost 45 miles south of the US-Canada border. As per the census of 2010, Burlington has a population of about 42,417 and is the hub of a number of counties and towns, like Franklin, Chittenden, Williston. It is named after the 3rd Earl of Burlington, Richard Boyle.
With the position of the town ideally placed by the side ofLake Champlain, helped it to develop as a port for increasing the scope of trade and commerce. This was further augmented with the completion of a number of canals, like the Champlain, Chambly and the Erie canals. With the increasing connectivity, Burlington became a bustling manufacturing and lumbering hub in no time. It has a humid continental climate. Summer offers one of the wettest months, while in the winter there is an average snowfall of about 81 inches.
Burlington stands fifth in terms of retail sales. A bustling area of retail trade is the Church Street Marketplace. Majority of the business is based on various utilities and services like education, trade and health related industries. Some leading MNC's have also their operations, here like GE and General Dynamics. It is one of the lowest unemployed cities in the USA.
