Calera is a city spread in Chilton and Shelby counties in the state of Alabama. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the state, with a population that has grown to nearly four times the figure between 2000 and 2010. The city has a total area of 12.9 square miles. 0.04 square miles (0.23%) of the total area is water. The name means "limestone" in Spanish. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Construction, retail trade, finance and insurance operations and manufacturing are the major economic activities in the area. For visitors, some points of interest within the city include Oliver Park, Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum, George Roy Park, Timberline Golf Course, Historical Calera Presbyterian Church, Ozan Winery and many more. The city has one airport, the Shelby County Airport. The closest hospital is the Shelby Baptist Medical Center, located about 10 miles away in Alabaster.
