Athens is a city in and the county seat of McMinn County, Tennessee. It is also the principal city of the Athens Metro Area, as well as a part of the larger Chattanooga-Cleveland-Athens Combined Statistical Area. It has a total area of 13.5 square miles, all of which is land. Before the advent of European explorers, there were Native American settlements here. The county was organized in 1819, and Pumpkintown, chosen as the county seat, was renamed Athens soon after. The city grew as a railroad town from the mid-nineteenth century. The major industries during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries were textile mills, flour mills, and timber mills, along with furniture and appliances industries.
Manufacturing, retail trade, construction and tourism are the major commercial activities here. There are a number of public elementary, middle and high schools. A few private schools are also present. Options for higher education include the Tennessee Wesleyan College and Tennessee Technology Center. Mcminn County Airport is the local airport. Athens Regional Medical Center on Madison Avenue attends to local healthcare needs. A number of banks have branches in the city, such as Branch Banking and Trust Company, The Citizens National Bank of Athens, The Fort Sill National Bank, United Community Bank and many more.
